Over towards the southwest of England, not far from what the locals call “Baarth”—Bath to a Northerner like me—is the gorgeous village of Lacock. It’s in the county of Wiltshire.
The heart of Lacock is home to Lacock Abbey, once a nunnery and later the home to William Henry Fox Talbot.
As many readers will know, I love photography, so I was fascinated to discover the exhibition about William Henry Fox Talbot, the inventor of photography. Lacock became his home, and it was here that he used a variety of chemicals to see how they reacted to light.
His discovery eventually led to the discovery of the positive. He invented the salted paper and calotype processes.
While Talbot froze an image, Lacock feels like a village frozen in time.
The abbey and its grounds are set on the edge of the village. Millions have seen the cloisters after they were used in a Harry Potter movie.
I would recommend visiting this place; it feels like a bucket stop in an idyllic and memorable location. You’ll not regret it. Find out more about it on the National Trust website.
