{"id":20770,"date":"2026-08-14T15:33:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T15:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fiftyfourandcounting.co.uk\/wordpress\/?p=20770"},"modified":"2026-08-14T15:33:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T15:33:00","slug":"a-solar-eclipse-in-estepona-and-an-unintended-profitable-ending","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fiftyfourandcounting.co.uk\/wordpress\/a-solar-eclipse-in-estepona-and-an-unintended-profitable-ending\/","title":{"rendered":"A solar eclipse in Estepona and an unintended profitable ending"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a few months I was aware of the solar eclipse due to take place on Wednesday 12th August 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I would be away with all my family I decided that I would purchase from Amazon a box of solar glasses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The box of twelve glasses also contained two solar filters that could be placed in front of a phone lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It cost me \u00a314.95<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve read my other articles about the Dwarf Mini and my astrophotography you will know how capable this device is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main challenge of filming a solar eclipse is finding the right position that allows for the sun to still be visible before disappearing behind buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I found a spot that faced an open plot being developed and where the buildings were relatively low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I set up the Dwarf Mini easily with its solar filter covering the lens and set it to track the sun. I placed the scope on top of a telephone cabinet made of concrete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I set it to just time-lapse so that I would capture as much of the event as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once that was done I pulled out the pack of solars glasses and started to unpack and thread string through them ready for the children and family to arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OtP4shpnrWY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What I had not anticipated was the image I was suddenly creating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was like honey to bees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All around me suddenly people were asking could they buy my solar glasses .. of course I said no and that they were specifically for my family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the solar eclipse started more and more people hovered around me seeing the eclipse on my phone .. some begged for me to sell the glasses which I declined but freely offered to share my glasses with parents and children so that they too could glimpse this unique spectacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now for those with youngsters you will remember their attention span.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the novelty of seeing the eclipse wore off the family wanted to go for dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More and more people begged me for our glasses and suddenly we sold seven pairs at \u20ac5 a piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I came away with half a box of solars glasses and \u20ac35 towards dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was not expecting it to be so profitable!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For a few months I was aware of the solar eclipse due to take place on Wednesday 12th August 2026.
